  • Price of Fruit and Lower Consumption

    A study found people will buy 35% more fruit — or 2.4 additional servings — when the price is discounted by 20%. The effect of discounting had less impact on vegetable consumption. This is unsurprising as fruit is often seen more as a discretionary purchase, akin to a treat.

  • Vegetable Diet and LDL Cholesterol

    Compared with the starch-based and low-fat diets, the high-fiber vegetable diet resulted in the largest reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the "bad" kind) cholesterol.

  • Sugars Can Be Turned into Fat

    When we are eating excess amounts of carbohydrates (sugars), liver converts the carbon compounds from sugar into fatty acid, and then fat.

    If we continue to consume too much of sugars, complex or simple, and to accumulate fat, especially in the waist area, we can develop insulin resistance.

  • Trees and Fungi Share Resources and Information

    Forest trees and their root fungi share resources and information. The plant makes and delivers food to the fungus; the fungus increases the plant’s water and mineral absorptive powers. Trees of different species can communicate with and support one another via their mycorrhizae. 

    It is known, that plants can communicate with unrelated species through the air. Plants getting chomped by herbivores, eaten by insects or attacked by pathogens release volatile chemicals that are sensed by neighboring plants, who up their defenses pro-actively.

  • High-Fat Diets and Obecity

    High-fat diets and low physical activity levels may accentuate the susceptibility to obesity by the FTO variant. The fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) has been shown to be associated with obesity and to influence appetite regulation.

  • Decline in Consumption of Fruit and Vegetables in USA

    Between 1999 and 2008, the actual number of servings of fruit and vegetables declined by about 10 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

    Thanks for getting back to me. I heard today that Waitrose are going to start selling tomatoes that have fallen off the vine ie ones that would have normally been wasted and rejected by supermarkets. Wondered what the fruitarian take would be? Is this a breakthrough in terms of fruit that has naturally fallen being sold nationwide.

    This is me.

    Hi, my real name is Lena, I founded this site Fruitarians.net in 2010 as an international fruitarian community. 

    Fruitarianism for me is a quest for optimal ethical ways to live and for all good diets based on fruits and seeds.  

    I am a long term vegan-fruitarian, who radically changed her lifestyle as a teenager, at 18, and maintained and adjusted it during two following decades. I doubted fruitarianism, but my fruitarian position remains surprisingly strong. This a very short version of my fruitarian story.

    Hi, thank you for checking out Fruitarians.net! My name is Lena, I am also known as Fruitarian Lena. I am a long-term vegan fruitarian, the founder of the site (the former International Fruitarian Network) - my attempt to provide an independent inviting platform for all people to tell about their ethical lifestyle choices, and to participate in the civil public debate. Currently, I am considering my options in building an interesting resource on fruitarianism. 

    I believe the future of humanity depends on our ability to come to certain agreements

Water

Water is an essential nutrient - it is required in amounts that exceed the body's ability to produce it. All biochemical reactions occur in water. It fills the spaces in and between cells and helps form structures of large molecules such as protein and glycogen. 

Most foods contain water. The body can usually get 20% of its total water requirements from solid foods alone. The human body can last weeks without food, but only days without water. 

The digestion process also produces water as a byproduct and can provide around 10 per cent of the body’s water requirements.  

Water is a transparent and nearly colorless chemical substance. Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms

Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 97% of the planet's crust water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps. Only 2.5% of this water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice (excepting ice in clouds) and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes.

Safe drinking water is essential to humans and other lifeforms even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. ~One billion people still lack access to safe water. It was estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability, and by 2030 water demand in some developing regions of the world will exceed supply by 50%.

Approximately 70% of the freshwater used by humans goes to agriculture.
