    In March 23 2017, I borrowed in my local library an audio-book published in 2015 and titled: 

    The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate – Discoveries from a Secret World (English)

    I wish most people had the information in it. I am deeply thankful to the author, Peter Wohlleben, and the researchers for their work. This was my tiny review of it at that time.

    Some chapters touched me even deeper than others, and the last one brought me to tears. It was an invaluable read for me as a fruitarian and a human being.

    My name is Margaret Lozano. I’m the host of the ModVegan YouTube channel youtube.com/c/ModVegan and author of the accompanying blog ModVegan.com. I’m a historian by training, but my real passion is learning, and YouTube has given me a chance to share my ideas with the world! My channel is a bit different from other vegan channels, because I have a very modern, skeptical approach to many issues related to veganism. I try to give people interesting things to think about and then provide a place to explore those ideas without judgement (well, maybe with a little judgement, I’m only human).

    I'm Rhys Michael. I'm 20 years old, and i'm a CNA.

    2. How would you describe this stage of your life?

    Hectic and disorganized.

    3. Tell us something about your background.

    I grew up with a lower middle class family in a dump neighborhood. My parents were democrat and religious but they never imposed that on me.

    4. What inspires you in your future?

    Honestly, this very questionnaire. The idea that maybe i'll get to meet people who are willing to view vegetation as an organism deserving of its own future.

  • Lotus-Eaters Lotophagi

    Lotus Tree Fruits

    Lotus-eaters (lotophagi or lotophaguses, lotophages) were fruitarians, whose primary foods were fruits and flowers of a lotus tree. 

    Herodotus, in the 5th century BCE, was sure that the lotus-eaters still existed in his day, in coastal Libya:

    A promontory jutting out into the sea from the country of the Gindanes is inhabited by the lotus-eaters, who live entirely on the fruit of the lotus-tree. The lotus fruit is about the size of the lentisk berry and in sweetness resembles the date. The lotus-eaters even succeed in obtaining from it a sort of wine.

    Polybius identifies the land of the lotus-eaters as the island of Djerba (ancient Meninx), off the coast of Tunisia. Later this identification is supported by Strabo.

    According to Greek mythology, lotophagi lived on an island dominated by lotus plants, and its flowers of fruits were narcotic, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy.

    A newspaper article about forming of a fruitarian community in California was published in Medford Mail (Medford, Jackson County, Oregon) on Friday, October 16, 1896.

    A colony of fruitarians is being formed in Santa Barbara county by W. S. Manning, who subsists solely on uncooked fruit and nuts. They will be located near Los Olivos. 

    Los Olivos is a census-designated place in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California. In 1885 Alden March Boyd planted five thousand olive trees there, and called it Rancho De Los Olivos. The 1880s were a boom time for California.

    People wrote thousands of love emails to trees

    The city of Melbourne assigned trees email addresses so citizens could report problems. Instead, people wrote thousands of love letters to their favorite trees.

Vitamin A

Retinoids retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid - 3 active forms of vitamin A - "preformed" vitamin A.

Beta carotene can easily be converted to vitamin A by the human body. 

Large amounts of supplemental vitamin A (but not beta carotene) can be harmful to bones.

Vitamin A keeps tissues and skin healthy, plays an important role in bone growth. Diets rich in the carotenoids alpha carotene and lycopene seem to lower lung cancer risk. Carotenoids act as antioxidants. Foods rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin may protect against cataracts. Essential for vision lycopene may lower prostate cancer risk.

Recommended daily amount: 700 mcg - 900 mcg or 3 mg - 6 mg beta-carotene (~ 1 cup of raw cantaloupe or sweet red peppers, or 2 mangoes, or 1/5 of one baked sweet potato). 

Because the body converts all dietary sources of vitamin A into retinol, 1 mcg of physiologically available retinol is equivalent to the following amounts from dietary sources: 1 mcg of retinol, 12 mcg of beta-carotene, and 24 mcg of alpha-carotene or beta-cryptoxanthin. From dietary supplements, the body converts 2 mcg of beta-carotene to 1 mcg of retinol.
