  • Declaration on Consciousness

    On July 7, 2012, a prominent international group of scientists - cognitive neuroscientists, neuropharmacologists, neurophysiologists, neuroanatomists and computational neuroscientists - gathered at The University of Cambridge to reassess the neurobiological substrates of conscious experience and related behaviors in human and non-human animals

    The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness:

    The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states. Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors. Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Nonhuman animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these neurological substrates.

  • Anyone Can Be Real Vegan

    My comment on ModVegan's video "Vegan Sell-Outs":

    Everyone can be vegan - just eat vegan, and maybe go further. Veganism is for everyone, in every industry, with any occupation, and situation, and any levels of awareness or ethics. Calling anyone "not real vegan" - especially knowing that being vegan is not a rewarding social position - is unnecessary demanding and even intimidating fashion among vegans, detrimental to the spread of veganism, imho. I observed it for years, and never witnessed anything good or productive resulting from it.

    Sorry to disagree on this one, Margaret. 

  • Fruitarians Are Not Alike

    In a long discussion on youtube that started with my comment (it  was later deleted), in which I was objecting some points the author of the video made, on one point I responded to another person, who asked me about fruitarianism after I mentioned it:

    The one thing I should to tell you here is that fruitarians are not all alike, there are not many of them (us) but they all have their unique set of reasons to follow this lifestyle. For example, my reasons developed from ethical, aesthetic and habitual considerations, many fruitarians are religiously driven (I am a lifelong atheist myself), many think that raw food is the answer to all health challenges and eat lots of fruit as a part of the diet (I am not a raw-foodie), some do not even consume seeds, and subset of this group believe that seeds are just like babies; some eat leaves, some don't, not all fruitarians are vegans, etc. The only thing I found similar among all fruitarians I know, is that the biggest part of their diet (~75%) is fruit, usually fresh, and there are some studies already made that could be used in support of such choice. 

    I hope it gives you some idea about the absence of uniformity in fruitarianism, and why discussing it here is not preferable. Also, I am obviously not able to speak neither for all fruitarians, nor for all vegans.

  • Response to Liberation Pledge

    I learned about this DxE pledge on the great channel ModVegan, and commented: 

    Margaret, this is the first time I hear about this Liberation Pledge (thank you), and I am completely against it.

    Positive pear-pressure? They are calling for acts of public disrespect to the participants' closest people! The first result will be alienation of these people from their loved ones, colleagues, and clients, and in deep personal problems.

    Your alternative is much better, but every vegan would act this way in most situations anyway. I am a long-term vegan, BTW.

    If some people tell you that you need to drink multiple liters of water and eat over 3000-5000 food calories every day regardless what your individual needs may be, if they advise you to sleep half of your lifetime without providing any supporting scientific data, if they tell you to never ever consume toxic temperature treated foods and then later switch the recommendation to any carbs, if they say you can eat tons of low fat stuff like potatoes and do not ever gain weight, if they try to alienate you from the rest of humanity by urging you to speak up and give ultimatums anytime anybody use any animal products, but they start with slamming people who are their direct competitors on the media market for trading only one ethically questionable product in small quantities, and in the same time they never discuss how some huge banana companies destroyed vast areas of wildlife, if they justify anything they say by their caring for animals and the planet, if they shame people with other body shapes and call it love, if they delete all challenging data on their sites, and tell people who are not successful on the regiment that they just lie, do something wrong or simply need years for a good lifestyle to start working, and then they tell you, that this is the only way to be healthy and considerate, - please do not necessarily believe it

  • Fruitarian Facebook Page Updates Removed

    Dear fruitarian friends and supporters of this page, several month ago Facebook had removed the updates of this and, as far as I know, many other pages from the main feeds of subscribers, and after that only few people who had apparently re-added the updates to their news pages are able to see the posts, as well as the new subscribers, only if the fb shows them as a "top story" for the default settings for most people. Before almost each message here was seen by at least half of all followers, now it is around 2-3%. Even for me, the admin, it is difficult to see the updates.

    I should have drawn your attention to this earlier, but it seemed to be making no sense, because most of you still won't get the message. It was quite a discouraging experience, waiting for the problem been solved. Today I realized that even your messages and links here stay unnoticed! Please accept my apology, there is not much I can do about it, but I'll give it a thought. Facebook offers now (less aggressively than after the change) to "boost" each post - basically, to push them onto subscribers of the page and their friends for ~$40+ for one day. This is kind of strange and not sustainable, because this page is not for business...

  • Tarahumara Runners on Corn and Beans Diet

    The Rarámuri or Tarahumara are a Native American people of northwestern Mexico who are renowned for their long-distance running ability. Rarámuri, means "runners on foot" or "those who run fast". Staple crops are corn and beans.

    Frugan (fruitarian) runners Tarahumara were described by Ruth Heidrich, Ph.D., a runner for 36 years and vegan for 21 years, who won over 800 age-group first place trophies in runs, triathlons, biathlons, and track and field, and completed the Ironman Triathlon 6 times, run 67 marathons, and holds a number of fitness records, following a diet similar to the Tarahumara:

    "...Their only food is tesguino, milled corn mixed with water to a drinkable consistency. This is the mainstay (75%) of Tarahumara diet, with the remaining food being beans and squash. They also take the milled corn as their sole food when traveling, since it is lightweight, doesn't spoil, and is easily prepared by mixing it with water in a half gourd they carry with them. This gives them great stamina and, more importantly, none of them appeared to be protein or calcium deficient with this plant-based diet."

    The Tarahumara runners are legendary for their 24-, 36-, even 72-hour long runs. In the Leadville 100-miler in 1991, the Tarahumara took first, second, and fourth places.

    Well, I eat an entirely plant-based diet. 

    I believe in a whole-foods diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, ancient grains, proteins and healthy fatty acids. Green vegetables, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, ancient grains, avocado, quinoa, tempeh, beans and fruits are a main source of fuel.

    Lotus-eaters (lotophagi or lotophaguses, lotophages) were fruitarians, whose primary foods were fruits and flowers of a lotus tree. 

    Herodotus, in the 5th century BCE, was sure that the lotus-eaters still existed in his day, in coastal Libya:

    A promontory jutting out into the sea from the country of the Gindanes is inhabited by the lotus-eaters, who live entirely on the fruit of the lotus-tree. The lotus fruit is about the size of the lentisk berry and in sweetness resembles the date. The lotus-eaters even succeed in obtaining from it a sort of wine.

    Polybius identifies the land of the lotus-eaters as the island of Djerba (ancient Meninx), off the coast of Tunisia. Later this identification is supported by Strabo.

    According to Greek mythology, lotophagi lived on an island dominated by lotus plants, and its flowers of fruits were narcotic, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy.

  • Vegetarianism

    Vegetarianism is the theory and practice of voluntary non-consumption of the flesh of any animal, including sea animals.

    The known history of vegetarianism begins civilizations of ancient India, Egypt, and Greece. Religious groups in Egypt (~ 3,200 BCE - Before Current Era) practiced abstinence from flesh and from wearing animal-derived clothing. The earliest records of vegetarianism as a concept and practice amongst a significant number of people concern the India and Greece civilizations. In both instances the diet was closely connected with the idea of nonviolence toward animals (Ahimsain India), and was promoted by religious groups and philosophers. In the ancient Vedic period vegetarianism was encouraged, but eating some kinds of meat was allowed by law.

Food Energy

Food energy is chemical energy that animals derive from their food and molecular oxygen through the process of cellular respiration. Humans and other animals need a minimum intake of food energy to sustain their metabolism and to drive their muscles.

Organisms derive food energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins as well as from organic acids, polyols, and ethanol present in the diet. Some diet components that provide little or no food energy, such as water, minerals, vitamins, cholesterol, and fiber, may still be necessary to health and survival for other reasons. 

Using the International System of Units, researchers measure energy in joules (J) or in its multiples; the kilojoule (kJ) is most often used for food-related quantities. An older metric system unit of energy, still widely used in food-related contexts, is the "food calorie" or kilocalorie (kcal or Cal), equal to 4.184 kilojoules. 

<>Fats and ethanol have the greatest amount of food energy per mass, 37 and 29 kJ/g (8.8 and 6.9 kcal/g), respectively. Proteins and most carbohydrates have about 17 kJ/g (4.1 kcal/g). 

Conventional food energy is based on heats of combustion in a bomb calorimeter and corrections that take into consideration the efficiency of digestion and absorption and the production of urine.
