  • Resveratrol in Red Wine is Not Healthy

The lowest rates of heart disease were in people with the lowest levels of resveratrol. Resveratrol - a substance found in red wine, grapes and chocolate - may not add years to your life, and it doesn't appear to reduce the risk for heart disease or cancer either, according to new research.

Resveratrol has been credited as being responsible for the so-called "French paradox," in which even a diet high in cholesterol and fat can be healthy if it is accompanied with red wine, the researchers explained. For the study, Semba's team followed nearly 800 men and women 65 years or older who were part of the Aging in the Chianti Region study from 1998 to 2009 in two villages in Italy.

Researchers found no significant differences in the rate of death from those with the lowest levels of resveratrol to the highest.

  • 30 Million Trees Yearly Die for USA Books

Use libraries and borrow books, buy used and e-books! Why?

Each year ~ 30 million trees are used to make books sold in US, many of which are sourced from endangered forests.
U.S. book industry uses less than 10% recycled fiber for its paper (some publishers are better than others).

  • Lifestyle

Lifestyle - interests, opinions, and behavioural orientations of an individual, group, or culture.

Personal lifestyle typically reflects individual attitudes, way of life, values, world view, and personal identity. Not all aspects of a lifestyle are voluntary. Surrounding social and technical systems can constrain the lifestyle choices available to the individual. Location is important factor of lifestyle. The nature of the neighborhood in which a person resides affects the set of lifestyles available to that person due to differences in degrees of affluence and proximity to natural and cultural environments.

Lifestyle may include views on politics, religion, health, and intimacy.

For example, "green lifestyle" means holding beliefs and engaging in activities that consume fewer resources and produce less harmful waste, and deriving a sense of self from holding these beliefs and engaging in these activities.

  • Defining Fruitarianism

I was adjusting my definition of fruitarianism for 20 years, periodically changing it after reflecting on what I learned and experienced. You can read it on the top of the page, and the current version is this:

Fruitarianism - a quest for optimal ethical ways to live and diets based on fruits and seeds.

This is the line I just attempted to add to the definition of fruitarianism on the Wikipedia page
"Fruitarianism can also be viewed as a set of ethical values, including respecting lives of plants, and their implementation in lifestyle." But I could not find eligible resources to cite.

Wiki is the most popular resource online, and the article dedicated to fruitarianism requires some explanation for most people who are new to the term. In this article, I will also give my personal perspective of a practicing skeptic fruitarian.

  • My Fruitarian Story

    This is me.

Hi, my real name is Lena, I founded this site Fruitarians.net in 2010 as an international fruitarian community.

Fruitarianism for me is a quest for optimal ethical ways to live and for all good diets based on fruits and seeds.

I am a long term vegan-fruitarian, who radically changed her lifestyle as a teenager, at 18, and maintained and adjusted it during two following decades. I doubted fruitarianism, but my fruitarian position remains surprisingly strong. This a very short version of my fruitarian story.

George Bernard Shaw

The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity.

Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score

The protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) has been adopted by FAO/WHO as the preferred method for the measurement of the protein value in human nutrition.

PDCAAS = Amino Acid Score x Digestibility

The method is based on comparison of the concentration of the first limiting essential amino acid in the test protein with the concentration of that amino acid in a reference (scoring) pattern. This scoring pattern is derived from the essential amino acid requirements of the preschool-age child.

Although the principle of the PDCAAS method has been widely accepted, critical questions have been raised in the scientific community:

  1. the validity of the preschool-age child amino acid requirement values (more than 4 times greater than the EAA requirement for an adult),
  2. the validity of correction for fecal instead of ileal digestibility,
  3. the truncation of PDCAAS values to 100%.

The reference scoring pattern was based on studies performed more than 25 years ago on a limited number of 2-year-old children recovering from malnutrition.

According to the current official recommendations, a 2-year old child needs ~ 3x higher essential-to-non-essential amino acid ratio, and needs essential amino acids in different proportions than adult. Methionine/cysteine is the limiting essential amino acids for adults, and for children it is lysine or tryptophan.

The use of fecal digestibility overestimates the nutritional value of a protein because amino acid nitrogen entering the colon is lost for protein synthesis in the body and is, at least in part, excreted in urine as ammonia.
