All about fruitarianism with a long-term fruitarian, Lena

Fruits

Botanical fruits - the seed-bearing structures in flowering plants.

Nuts are the one-seeded, hard-shelled fruit of some plants (e.g. hazelnut).

  • Fruit for Young Women to Prevent Cancer

The results of the study, published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ), suggest young women should increase their fruit intake, especially during adolescence, in order to prevent cancer.

  • Price of Fruit and Lower Consumption

A study found people will buy 35% more fruit — or 2.4 additional servings — when the price is discounted by 20%. The effect of discounting had less impact on vegetable consumption. This is unsurprising as fruit is often seen more as a discretionary purchase, akin to a treat.

  • Decline in Consumption of Fruit and Vegetables in USA

Between 1999 and 2008, the actual number of servings of fruit and vegetables declined by about 10 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

  • Fallen Fruit

Maya, a journalist from Guardian, has asked me today about my opinion on distribution of fallen tomatoes:

    Hi Lena

Thanks for getting back to me. I heard today that Waitrose are going to start selling tomatoes that have fallen off the vine ie ones that would have normally been wasted and rejected by supermarkets. Wondered what the fruitarian take would be? Is this a breakthrough in terms of fruit that has naturally fallen being sold nationwide.

    Any thoughts?

  • Non-Sweet Fruit Salad

Non-sweet fruitarian salad - basic, easy, and quick

Let me tell you how I make a basic non-sweet fruitarian salad, step by step, with 12 pictures.

This is a very simple recipe. Making this tomato-based salad, you can skip any ingredient, according to your preferences or mood, and still have a decent fairly healthy basic fruitarian or frugan meal. It takes less than 10 minutes to make it if you already have tomatoes and some avocadoes, chips, or greens. The dishes are easy to wash afterwards.

The ingredients you can usually get in any grocery store, in any season. People who have no interest in following any special diet can enjoy this salad too, as well as all vegetarians - it is vegan.

  • Fruits and Seeds

Seeds and fruits are dispersal units (diaspores) of primarily plant organisms - the parts that plants produce to be separated.

Most fruitarians see both fruits and seeds as an ethical and good source of nutrition.

Albert Schweitzer

The thinking man must oppose all cruel customs no matter how deeply rooted in tradition and surrounded by a halo. When we have a choice, we must avoid bringing torment and injury into the life of another, even the lowliest creature; to do so is to renounce our manhood and shoulder a guilt which nothing justifies.

Water

Water is an essential nutrient - it is required in amounts that exceed the body's ability to produce it. All biochemical reactions occur in water. It fills the spaces in and between cells and helps form structures of large molecules such as protein and glycogen.

Most foods contain water. The body can usually get 20% of its total water requirements from solid foods alone. The human body can last weeks without food, but only days without water.

The digestion process also produces water as a byproduct and can provide around 10 per cent of the body’s water requirements.

Water is a transparent and nearly colorless chemical substance. Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms

Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 97% of the planet's crust water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps. Only 2.5% of this water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice (excepting ice in clouds) and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes.

Safe drinking water is essential to humans and other lifeforms even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. ~One billion people still lack access to safe water. It was estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability, and by 2030 water demand in some developing regions of the world will exceed supply by 50%.

Approximately 70% of the freshwater used by humans goes to agriculture.
