Pretty good. But I'd say, as long as you are moving you are alive, till the nutrition runs out - and then both stop... :-) |
Hello, I'm new to this forum. It was found when searching for information about Zeki Tamer. He was a close family friend. My father and Zeki were life-long friends, both raised in the Istanbul suburb of Bebeck on the Bosphorus. Zeki and his lovely wife were two of the finest humans I've ever met; both full of life, humanity, humility and joy, even at advanced ages. Unfortunately Zeki's wife died of cancer long before Zeki passed. She was a swimming gold medalist for the USA at the 1936 Munich Olympics. The last time I saw Zeki was in the late 80's just before my father was stricken by stroke. Could anyone give me details of the last years of his life and when he passed? I still have beautifully written letters from Zeki; written in his marvelous, calligraphy-style handwriting, as well as a wonderful poem he wrote to/for me. It is framed and still on the wall of my bedroom. Any information about Zeki's later years would be much appreciated. |
Zeki and his wife Marion often traveled to my parents' Central Florida home, during the winter, to get some sunshine and put the wet, snowy, windy Cincinnati winters behind them for awhile. Both Zeki and my dad would spend the day swimming at our club or going to the beach for the same. Whenever I was visiting at the same time, Zeki and I would have long talks about life and in particular nutrition and athletic endeavor. During these discussions Zeki would detail his eating habits that went back to when he was 15 years old living in Bebeck, Turkey. He was 8 or 9 years older than my father, I believe. Dad was adamant about our family eating healthily, even back before it was popular. We had no processed foods, soft drinks, frozen foods or canned foods in the house; only fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, yogurt, cheese and eggs along with lean meat, chicken and fish. Dad was a "health nut" before there were health nuts, so to speak. Zeki was a notch or two above that. I can remember dad telling me about Zeki before I met him in the late 60's. He was the kid from Bebeck that, from the age of 15, only ate raw foods and no animal products except for cheese and yogurt. To the best of my recollection Zeki consumed only the following:
Later in life he may have altered his diet, but I'm not privy to such information. In the 70's Zeki was one of the top Masters runners in the world for his age group. Either Zeki or a Russian would win on the track at world championships. I don't recall the distances clearly, but I think they ran the 200, 400 & 800 meter races. Zeki have a wonderfully smooth running style and was quite a good swimmer also, as was my dad. |
Cool! Thank you very much Dan. Your family is quite special too! I hope you can share with us even more details after you are ready with (re)reading the correspondence with Zeki, or if your research brings some new facts. |
