It looks like every person understands word "fruit" differently :) What is your understanding? Here is something from Wiki's:

What is fruit?

In broad terms, a fruit is a structure of a plant that contains its seeds.

Fruit normally means the fleshy seed-associated structures of certain plants that are sweet and edible in the raw state. Seed-associated structures that do not fit these informal criteria are usually called by other names, such as vegetables, pods, nut, ears and cones.

Fruits (in either sense of the word) are the means by which many plants disseminate seeds. Most edible fruits, in particular, were evolved by plants in order to exploit animals as a means for seed dispersal, and many animals (including humans to some extent) have become dependent on fruits as a source of food. Fruits account for a substantial fraction of world's agricultural output, and some (such as the apple and the pomegranate) have acquired extensive cultural and symbolic meanings.

In biology (botany), a "fruit" is a part of a flowering plant that derives from specific tissues of the flower, mainly one or more ovaries. Taken strictly, this definition excludes many structures that are "fruits" in the common sense of the term, such as those produced by non-flowering plants (like juniper berries), and fleshy fruit-like growths that develop from other plant tissues close to the fruit (accessory fruit, or more rarely false fruit or pseudocarp), such as cashew fruits. Often the botanical fruit is only part of the common fruit, or is merely adjacent to it. On the other hand, the botanical sense includes many structures that are not commonly called "fruits", such as bean pods, corn kernels, wheat grains, tomatoes, and many more. However, there are several variants of the biological definition of fruit that emphasize different aspects of the enormous variety that is found among plant fruits.

Many fruits that, in a botanical sense, are true fruits are actually treated as vegetables in cooking and food preparation, because they are not particularly sweet. These culinary vegetables include cucurbits (e.g., squash, pumpkin, and cucumber), tomatoes, peas, beans, corn, eggplant, and sweet pepper. In addition, some spices, such as allspice and chilies, are fruits, botanically speaking.  In the culinary sense of these words, a fruit is usually any sweet-tasting plant product, especially those associated with seed(s), a vegetable is any savoury or less sweet plant product, and a nut is any hard, oily, and shelled plant product.

Technically, a cereal grain is also a kind of fruit, a kind which is termed a caryopsis. However, the fruit wall is very thin, and is fused to the seed coat, so almost all of the edible grain is actually a seed. Therefore, cereal grains, such as corn, wheat and rice are better considered as edible seeds, although some references do list them as fruits. Edible gymnosperm seeds are often misleadingly given fruit names, e.g., pine nuts, ginkgo nuts, and juniper berries.

I went to a fruitarian festival, and we had many debates, one of them was about eating oranges. the result is that oranges are not made for human consumption, only for medicinal purpose, like for a couple of days mono-diet. Those whom tried it got really skiny and got tooth problems.

Another was about the fruit-vegetables, like zoukini, tomatoe, advocato and cucumber. The result was that humans like sweet better than anything. The mothers milk taste sweet, for exemple. Also, we can not go monodiet on these fruits, we will get ill, and our body will say no more after just a day or 2. They found some positive about it though. Like the advocato in cold days, for the oil, or the advocatoes with tomatoes and salt being a good meal to share with nonfruitarian.

As we know in order to get all the complexitys of every fruit we must not mix them in our meal, we must reproduce what we have been doing for millions of years, we would find a tree, eat from it, and be satisfied till the next meal that should usuelly come only after many hours, and i don't think we would run to the next country to get some other fruit that was not local, so we would eat one fruit for every season, or whatever fruit would grow around your neibourhood. That is what your body recognize, everything else is adaptation, therefore survival.

Thank you Lena, for your familiiar articles about fruitarianism. Next year i want to organize another fruitarian summit, as our last one had been very successful and i would like to inivte you too. We do have a similar life-habits and i saw, that you are also  a long term fruitarian as my best fruitarian friends.

@ Pomme:

Oranges and any fruits are made for a special purpose.. Our climate-zones and the for seasons on Earth with our different seasonal fruits carry some secrets. They are made, to cover all our needs, where-ever we live.

f.e. Oranges - are made for the mediteranian climates and zones. In Northern Europe there are no oranges but apples and other fruits.

Anyhow, i should have come to fruktifest, but i could not make it, as i was too busy.

All fruits are also medicin. We should not eat Oranges out of season, to keep the balance.

People who get tooth problems by eating fruits, f.e. oranges, eat them mostly unripe and out of the season.

Since i started to live a fruitarian live, my tooth problems disappeared.

I know all this horror-movies about failed fruitarian experimentators and i agree - who failed, did something wrong.

The best fruits are the local seasonal ones, without import- and cooling chains..

I tried to embed my video-answer, you may find it here here.. about fruitarian teeth

Thank you for this nice article on what fruit is.  I agree with this.  I think fruit eating is about doing least harm, but so many foods can fit the fruit category ie if they come from a plant that flower ie squash.

for now I eat sweet fruits and non sweet fruits according to how I feel

Squash is also a fruit in the biological meaning. Most humans have the tendencey to believe that fruits are round sweat somethings that grow on trees. When i say fruit i mean that ripe seed carrying objects, where all plant-energy concentrates that grow out of a pollinated flower. Fruit does not mean that is has to taste sweet.

Fruit can be apples and also some vegetables. Usually roots are no fruits, neigther gowing leafs, nor fish or meat..

Cauliflower is not a fruit but cauliFLOWER. It's that easy.. isn't it? FRUITarians are called fruitarian because they live on FRUITS - I never heard about ROOTarians or SPROUTarians nor LEAFarians.. except VEGEtarians.

Frugivore are FRUITarians and they know what fruits are. Love and Sandras fruit hand @ FRUITeater
