  • To Selfishness by Mexie Mermaid

    Fruitarian Lena: 

    I wonder about your sources for the base idea of selfishness. It sounds like popularized nonsense (sorry, I like your channel, and expect more :) 

    So, all people who save money for their future or business, are selfish?! I don't know people who don't want to give anything of theirs for anything. 

    Do you know a bit from history, what happens when property rights are not respected? And what on Earth "patriarchy" has to do with it?

  • Overnutrition

    Overnutrition, a type of malnutrition, is emerging with rates of obesity and related chronic diseases associated with urbanisation, aging populations, technological development and globalisation of food supplies and industry. Billions of dollars are spent annually by the food industry to promote the consumption of highly refined, high-calorie foods with little or no nutritional value. 

    At least 35 million overweight children are living in developing countries and 8 million in developed countries. Children are increasingly exposed to high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt, energy-dense, micronutrient-poor foods which tend to be cheaper than healthy foods. General imbalance in energy intake compared to physical activity levels is driving the obesity epidemic. In industrialised countries, child obesity risk is associated with lower household income, women with less education, and single parent households.

    Obesity is increasingly prevalent among adolescent girls and women, as access to a greater quantity of inexpensive, tasty, and convenient foods increases. 

    Taxation on high-calorie, low-nutrition foods can play a significant role in reducing the consumption of such products. Population-wide weight-control campaigns that raise awareness among medical staff, policy-makers and the public at large can also help to reduce obesity. Particularly important is the promotion of health literacy. Additional measures include restrictions on the marketing of unhealthy foods and sugary drinks to children, and controls on the use of misleading health and nutrition claims; mandatory front-of-pack food labelling helps consumers to identify healthier options. 

  • Child's Right to Adequate Nutrition

    A child’s right to adequate and appropriate nutrition is stipulated under Article 6 and 24 of the Convention on the Right’s of the Child. 

    In 2010, an estimated 171 million children (167 million of whom live in developing countries) were stunted. Children who are stunted are at a greater risk of having difficulty learning, playing, engaging in normal childhood activities and being productive members of society later in life. Undernourished children are also more susceptible to frequent and repeated disease and illness due to a weakened immune response, as well as at a greater risk of becoming overweight or obese later in life.

    A child’s nutritional future begins with the mother’s nutritional status in adolescence and during pregnancy.

  • Climate Change and Food Security

    Climate change further threatens food security through its impact on global food production and consequently on food prices. With growing populations and higher demand for food, the impact of climate change could result in an increase of 20% of people at risk of chronic hunger.

  • Cooled Tomatoes Have Less Flavour

    Cooling tomatoes at temperatures below 12 degrees Celsius, or 53.6 degrees Fahrenheit, hampers the enzymes in the fruit - they are less effective at combining volatile compounds, which are crucial for imparting the tomatoes' flavor. The taste of tomatoes is determined by the interactions of sugars, acids and a set of 15 to 20 volatile compounds. 

    7 Days of cold exposure reduced the levels of volatile compounds by up to 65%. The brief recovery periods after chilling failed to restore the fruits' volatiles to normal levels.

    Commercial tomatoes are widely perceived by consumers as lacking flavor. A major part of that problem is a postharvest handling system that chills fruit. Low-temperature storage is widely used to slow ripening and reduce decay. However, chilling results in loss of flavor. 

  • Banana Industry Environmental Impact

    The banana industry is dominated by 5 international companies. When bananas are grown on a large monocultural scale, thousands of tonnes of toxic pesticides are poured on the plantations often sprayed from planes overhead. Five of the chemicals used on bananas are classified as extremely hazardous by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Banana bunches are often wrapped on the tree with pesticide-coated plastic bags for protection. 

  • Banana Industry Impacts Rainforests

    According to Rainforest Relief, Americans should still avoid purchasing bananas altogether and instead opt for fruit grown locally, such as apples, peaches, cherries or pears.

    Banana plantations were infamous for their environmental and social abuses, which included the use of dangerous pesticides, poor working conditions, water pollution and deforestation. Pesticide-impregnated plastic bags, which protect bananas as they grow, often littered riverbanks and beaches near banana farms, while agrochemical runoff and erosion killed fish, clogged rivers and choked coral reefs.

    The group is hopeful that its work with farm cooperatives growing organic bananas under the shade of a diverse forest canopy in Costa Rica can eventually drive the larger international banana market toward better land use and worker safety standards.

  • Pomegranate Fruit Supplements and Juices

    Stay skeptical about fruit-containing supplements and pre-packaged juices: 

    A study was done on 27 supplements of pomegranate. Of the 27 tested only 5 appeared to be what the labels actually said.

    Another study looked at 45 commercial pomegranate juice samples from 23 different manufacturers in the United States. They each said 100% pomegranate juice on the label, but most of them lied. Only 6 out of 23 were what they said they were.

  • Fruitarian Facebook Page Updates Removed

    Dear fruitarian friends and supporters of this page, several month ago Facebook had removed the updates of this and, as far as I know, many other pages from the main feeds of subscribers, and after that only few people who had apparently re-added the updates to their news pages are able to see the posts, as well as the new subscribers, only if the fb shows them as a "top story" for the default settings for most people. Before almost each message here was seen by at least half of all followers, now it is around 2-3%. Even for me, the admin, it is difficult to see the updates.

    I should have drawn your attention to this earlier, but it seemed to be making no sense, because most of you still won't get the message. It was quite a discouraging experience, waiting for the problem been solved. Today I realized that even your messages and links here stay unnoticed! Please accept my apology, there is not much I can do about it, but I'll give it a thought. Facebook offers now (less aggressively than after the change) to "boost" each post - basically, to push them onto subscribers of the page and their friends for ~$40+ for one day. This is kind of strange and not sustainable, because this page is not for business...

  • Studies on Safety of GMO Foods

    Every major international science body in the world has reviewed multiple independent studiesin coming to the consensus conclusion that GMO crops are as safe or safer than conventional or organic foods. But until now, the magnitude of the research on crop biotechnology has never been cataloged.

    In response to what they believed was an information gap, a team of Italian scientists summarized 1783 studies about the safety and environmental impacts of GMO foods.

    The researchers couldn’t find a single credible example demonstrating that GM foods pose any harm to humans or animals.

Fungi

fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes unicellular microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as multicellular fungi that produce familiar fruiting forms known as mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom Fungi, which is separate from the other eukaryotic life kingdoms of plants and animals. Fungi do not use photosynthesis to create energy.
